How to be a better person this year
Happy 2018!
The start of a new year sure is
exciting, and most people use this as a time for motivation to make this year a
better one. For me, that means working on becoming a better person, and I have a LOT of goals for the year to come! I challenge you to also try making more
ethical and kinder choices this year, so 2018 can be not only a good year for
you but also a better year for the world you live in.
If you are lost and don’t know what you could
do to lead a more ethical life, here’s a few ideas on changes you can try
making this year to become a better person.

Reduce
animal suffering
I have been vegan for a few years
and I firmly believe that this is the most important step towards a more
ethical life. If you don’t know why someone would choose vegan, check out these
three posts I made.
Don’t be scared of veganism: it
might seem intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s as
natural as breathing. That doesn’t mean you should dive heads on – if it makes
you feel comfortable, go for it, but there is nothing wrong with a slow,
gradual change.
Buy less
It’s sad that most of the things we own were
made in terrible conditions for the workers and wasting valuable resources from
our planet. As I always say, everything that’s new as an impact, so be mindful
when buying. Money is power, and it’s our responsibility to use it on values we
believe in. Don’t buy just for the sake of buying – it might seem to make you
happy, but on the long run, that couldn’t be further away from the truth.
Really think things through before you take out your wallet – even (and
especially!) if it’s super cheap. As minimalists say, it’s not a good deal if
you don’t need it. Remember that for something to be really cheap, it’s safe to
assume that the person who made it wasn’t being paid fairly. So if you really
do need or want something, opt for second hand and ethically made.
Reduce
your waste
It’s scary the amount of trash we produce –
once you start noticing it, there’s no way to ignore it. If we keep going, soon
we’ll waste all our resources and there will be nothing for us but our trash.
So the next time you put something in the trash can think of what you could do
to never have that waste again. Maybe switch to handkerchiefs instead of
tissues (that was my first change!), take reusable bags when you go shopping,
start a composting bin or ditch the straws. This is definitely my main goal for
this year so if you’re up for the challenge, we can do it together.
Learn!
Watch documentaries, read books,
listen to talks… When we know better, we do better. It’s so important that we
don’t close our eyes to the bad things happening in the world, even if it gets
hard sometimes. If it’s hard for us to watch something, imagine what it would be like to
feel it in our own skin. I’m not saying that you must watch slaughterhouse or sweatshop videos –
you shouldn’t if it triggers you - but you should know what’s going on in these
places so you can make more educated choices on who to support.
For me, these are the most important
changes people should consider in order to become more conscious people. Did I
miss anything? How are you going to be a better person this year?
[It's funny that my first post of the year is in so many ways similar to my first blog post as The Ethical Girl- 6 Easy steps towards a more ethical life]
