Why Vegan? ~ The Animals (1/3)
The longer I am vegan the more I believe that this is the most ethical and compassionate choice I could make. There are three main reasons I live the way I do: The Animals, The People and The Environment
This is the most obvious reason for veganism, and the reason that made me vegan in the first place. I've always loved animals, so it is pretty easy for me to feel compassion towards them, but even someone that doesn't care for them should agree that they shouldn't be killed for no reason.
I don't think eating animals for survival is wrong, but the thing is, that's not what we're doing. It's not for our survival or for our health, since it is possible and fairly easy to thrive on a vegan diet. The reason we eat meat is that we grew up doing it, we were taught not to question it and everyone around us does it. But that doesn't make something right.
"The fish in my plate was alive once, and feared death, yet here he is" - I started thinking a lot about this and eventually decided to become vegetarian. That was all I knew at the moment - I don't want to kill for no reason. I need to eat plants to be healthy, but I don't need meat or fish. So I'm a vegetarian.
Killing is not the only problem
Most people don't think about how the animals in their plate lived. I certainly didn't until I became vegetarian - everything seems clearer when you're a few steps away, so it's way easier to know something is wrong when you're not the one doing it.
I won't describe violence, nor will I show images of animals suffering - you can see plenty of that in other places around the internet. But the animals do live in bad conditions, and unfortunately, that is the norm.
Think of the huge amounts of animal products that surround you: Every supermarket, every restaurant, every cafeteria... Do you honestly think that much meat can come from cows grazing in the fields?
Even if the slaughterhouses, labs and other places where animals are exploited weren't an environment prone to violence from workers to animals, the confinement to small spaces and the poor hygiene conditions makes the short lives of those animals pretty terrible. And knowing that every single animal product comes from cruelty and suffering was what turned me vegan.
I was going to talk about dairy, eggs, animals on clothing and tests on animals in specific, but I think that would probably have been a little too much for one post. I may or may not write about that in the future.
What I will post in the near future is my second reason to be vegan - The People.
