The Easiest DIY Deodorant
Store-bought deodorant is often filled with harmful chemicals, covered in plastic, and it even might be tested on animals. When you try buying an ethical alternative, as I did before - I tried Dr Organic and Faith in Nature - it doesn't come cheap, and it still comes in a disposable package. So although it is definitely a better choice than the regular deodorants, and these two are still very good products, I would rather spend two minutes mixing ingredients I already have at home to make my own zero-waste deodorant. Here's how I do it:
You will need:
- 1 part baking soda
- 1 part cornstarch
- 2 parts melted coconut oil
Instructions
Mix the ingredients. That's it!
You should get a runny, smooth mixture. I usually put it on the fridge to set, but it's not necessary.

The consistency will change depending on the temperature:
- If you live somewhere cold or you leave it on the fridge, the deodorant will get very solid. You can still scrape a little bit of with a stick or a spoon and apply it as it will melt on your skin
- In hot weather it will get very liquid, and you just have to dip a finger in it and use it. It works fine but it can get a little messy so I prefer storing it in the fridge when there's nowhere cool in the house
- Moderate temperatures are the best for this deodorant, as it gets creamy and easy to apply. However very few of us have those conditions all year long, and once the deodorant is applied it works really well no matter the temperature.
For me, this deodorant works better than any store-bought deodorant that I've tried. I still sweat, but it doesn't smell, and I only need to apply once in the morning and it will usually last the whole day, while before, using the regular brands, I had to be constantly reapplying...
However, everyone is different, so this might not work as well for you. But still, don't give up on DIY deodorant! There are so many different recipes online, I'm sure some of them will work for you. Once you find one you like, it is so easy, cheap, and most importantly, ethical.
