6 easy steps towards a more ethical life
For my first post I decided to talk about 6 really easy things you can do in your daily life to reduce your impact on the environment, on the animals and on the people
1. Reduce the consumption of animal products.
Maybe you don't feel comfortable enough to go vegan right now - it's okay. Small changes are better than none - what if you start experimenting with vegan meals, without committing? You can have a vegan day a week, or a vegan meal a day. Or maybe you'd rather give up one type of animal product, like milk, and switch to a plant-based alternative. Change something that is easy for you to change, and maybe you'll even realize it's not that hard to go vegan after all.
2. Choose secondhand.
Anything that's new has an impact - you're using up natural resources, energy, there are always waste materials that end up in landfills and unfortunately, more often than not there are workers being exploited. Avoid contributing to all that - buy secondhand!
3. Ditch the tissues!
We waste so much paper just to wipe our noses on! My nose is always dripping, no matter the season of the year, so I knew I had to stop buying tissues and get myself some reusable handkerchiefs. So I grabbed an old t-shirt and cut it into little pieces. It's not the prettiest, but honestly, it's just to wipe my nose.
4. Try making before buying
This goes for both food and hygiene products (and honestly, anything if your artsy enough!)
Products that are pre-made are usually wrapped in plastic and filled with bad chemicals, and might be tested on animals too. Not everyone has the time to make everything from scratch but whatever we can do, we should. It's not hard to switch your deodorant for a homemade one, and it works wonderfully too!
5. Ask "No straw, please" at bars and restaurants
It's so easy to refuse the unnecessary plastic! Ask for a spoon instead if you need to stir your juice.
6. Change your way of thinking
This is both the easiest and the hardest.Sometimes it is hard to know about bad stuff that goes on in the world, but you should learn about it anyway. When we know better, we do better, and it's so important to keep an open mind, to look from another perspective, to listen, to search and to think. So question everything, even what you think you already understand. And know that you'll never be perfect, but you can be better, and that is what you should focus on.
This is what changed the most about me when I started caring about ethical living. Not the way I eat, nor the way I shop, but the way I think.
